What to do in Praia do Forte.

Praia do Forte, in Mata de São João, is the most charming village on the North Coast of Bahia: pedestrian streets lined with shops and restaurants, beaches with natural pools protected by reefs and a strong ecological appeal — it is the home of the Tamar Project. All of it about an hour from Salvador, surrounded by preserved Atlantic Forest.

The beaches

01

Praia do Forte (central)

In front of the village, with calm waters and natural pools at low tide. Kiosk infrastructure and easy access on foot.

02

Praia de Papa-Gente

Known for the natural pools of warm, crystal-clear water that form among the reefs — great for a peaceful swim.

03

Praia do Lord

More secluded and bucolic, ringed by coconut palms — a good choice for those seeking quiet away from the village centre.

What to do

Tamar Project

Visitor centre of the sea-turtle conservation project, with tanks, exhibitions and educational activities — a must-see, great with children.

Garcia d'Ávila Castle

Ruins of a 16th-century fortress, one of the oldest buildings in Brazil, atop a hill overlooking the coast.

Sapiranga Reserve

Trails and river bathing amid preserved Atlantic Forest — hiking, cycling and contact with nature.

Natural pools

At low tide, the reefs form pools of calm, clear water along the shore. Check the tide table.

Diving and snorkelling

The reefs shelter colourful marine life — a good spot for family snorkelling and light diving.

Whale watching

Between July and October, humpback whales pass along the North Coast; there are boat trips in season (confirm operators and dates).

Getting there

Praia do Forte is in Mata de São João, about 80 km from Salvador and a 1-hour drive via the Estrada do Coco (BA-099) and Linha Verde. From Guarajuba, it is roughly 30 minutes heading north.

Practical tips

  • Check the tide table: the natural pools appear at low tide.
  • The village is largely closed to cars — park and walk.
  • Bring sunscreen and respect the conservation areas and the Tamar signage.
  • Whale season (Jul–Oct) is the best time for the watching trips.
